Shall all the multiplayer player ships have HP bars above them? transparent perhaps, or better without them just like chase ace style.
maybe parts of the ship can look damaged as health is near red, this will let us know which ships are almost dead and go for the kill, also will let us find easy points without blindly attacking everyone.
the ship damage sounds good as HP bars may make the game look a bit funny with everyone having green/orange/red bars above them running around.

After looking at the video again, I didn't notice any evident damage at all to any ships, including smoke from the ship.
