to answer your question,
Rocket jumps are basically a feature that was implemented to make use of the realistic 3D gravity system, beside the obvious reasons – which that it would be a great feature and what not.

But basically a ramp that you fly to, which will make you fly like a rocket over to the other side, or basically just make you fly onto a certain land on that same place which will possibly allow damage to other ships once landed?

It could also just be an escape mechanism, as sometimes maps gets too crowded, especially with alot of players, you could use the rocket jump as an escape, turbo onto the rocket jump and escape from the area.
